Why Spay or Neuter Your Pet?
Spaying and neutering offer both medical and behavioral benefits that extend throughout your pet’s life.
For female pets, spaying can eliminate the risk of uterine infections and certain cancers, while significantly reducing the risk of mammary tumors, especially when performed early. Spaying is crucial for preventing uterine cancer in rabbits, which is very common in unspayed females.
For male pets, neutering removes the risk of testicular cancer and lowers the likelihood of prostate disease.
Across species, these procedures can also reduce behaviors such as roaming, marking, and aggression. This can make pets easier to manage and reduce the chance of injury or getting lost.
When Should My Pet Be Spayed or Neutered?
Timing depends on your pet’s species, size, and overall health.
Most dogs and cats are spayed or neutered around 6 months of age, although larger breeds benefit from delayed surgery to allow additional development.
For rabbits and ferrets, timing may vary, but the procedure is often recommended once they reach an appropriate age and size. Ferrets can be spayed and neutered as young as 4 to 6 weeks, while rabbits need more time to grow, often waiting until they’re 3 to 6 months old. In female rabbits especially, spaying is strongly recommended due to the high risk of uterine cancer later in life.
What Should I Expect on Surgery Day?
Spay and neuter procedures are common, but they still require careful preparation, skilled anesthesia, and close monitoring every step of the way.
Before surgery, we perform a thorough pre-operative evaluation to ensure your pet is healthy and ready for anesthesia. During the procedure, your pet is placed under anesthesia and supported by a trained veterinary team member whose sole focus is monitoring their vital signs, including heart rate, breathing, oxygen levels, blood pressure, and temperature, from start through recovery.
As an AAHA-accredited animal hospital, we follow strict standards for anesthesia safety, patient monitoring, and pain management. These protocols are designed to keep your pet as safe and comfortable as possible throughout the entire process.
After surgery, pets go home the same day with clear recovery instructions. We will walk you through what to expect, including activity restrictions, incision care, and how to support a smooth, comfortable recovery at home.
Care That’s Thoughtful from Start to Finish
Spay and neuter procedures are performed every day, but the details still matter. From pre-surgical planning through recovery, each step is handled with attention to your pet’s specific needs, while following AAHA's gold standards of care.
We take time to walk through the plan with you ahead of surgery, monitor your pet closely during the procedure, and provide clear guidance for care at home. Recommendations are based on your pet’s species, age, and lifestyle, so the approach feels practical and appropriate, not one-size-fits-all.
If your pet is nearing the right age or you’re ready to plan ahead, we’re here to help you take the next step.
